Disturbance at Mass brings $20 fine
PA Wellington A young man who disturbed a midnight mass in Karori on Christmas Eve was fined $2O when he appeared in the Magistrate’s Court at Wellington yesterday. Anthony Michael Brough, aged 19, unemployed, pleaded guilty before Mr W. M. Willis, S.M.. to being drunk and disorderly. Sergeant W. T. Jaques said that just before midnight on December 24 Brough and some friends had arrived at the church. A priest had told them to leave as their vehicle was very noisy and they were using obscene language. Brough’s friends had left,
11 but he had stayed and had ■ been told he could not enter i|the church because of his ; | behaviour and drunkenness. 11 When the police arrived : i Brough had been upset, and when they tried to reason , with him and take him home, I he had become abusive. His . actions had again begun to : disrupt the service. His explanation to police ; had been that he did not like : the priest at the church. I A duty solicitor said that : Brough had intended to at--1 tend the service and had • arrived 10 minutes before the ' Mass began. An argument . had developed about where , his car should be parked.
