The courts Labourer sentenced for receiving bikes

A labourer who had admitted receiving eight bicycles, to a total value of $1915, was sentenced to six months periodic detention when he appeared before Mr B. A. Paimer. S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court yesterday. The Magistrate told Colin George Hodson, aged 24. that Christchurch was unfortunately afflicted by burglaries and the receiving of stolen property. Of the cycles he had received the defendant had solg four and had refused to Identify the person who had supplied them. Although it had been submitted that Hodson had been used by other people, he did not have to be. said the Magistrate.

Hodson was ordered to pay! compensation of .$732. Last week Hodson admitted receiving six 10-speed racing bicycles, and two other bicycles, the property) of Linwood Cycles Ltd., from' Peter Arthur Bourke on! November 26. Hodson had also admitted stealing 49 rolls of insulat- 1 Ing tape and 14 lengths of copper wire, valued at $132,; the property of the Municipal Electricity Department. On this offence the Magistrate imposed a sentence of six months periodic deten-i tion. to be served concurrently with the other. Counsel (Mr N. C. Chapman) submitted that on the receiving charge his client had been used by others and that he was regarded as "a soft touch.” All Hodson had received for his help had been $l5; from the person who had brought the cycles to him.

ESCAPE ADMITTED A 24-year-old man who' escaped from Addington Prison on December 10 had Told the police he did so because he wanted to speak to a friend who had escaped from Rolleston Prison. Geoffrey Alexander Boyd, who admitted the offence,' was remanded in custody to December 28 for a probation report and sentence. Detective Sergeant B. M.! Roswell said at 7.15 a.m. on .December 10 the defendant, iwho is serving an 18-month ijail term, had been released from Addington Prison for pre-release employment. Boyd had failed to attend his place of work or to return to prison. He had later approached relatives and had then given himself up to the police. Boyd had told the police it .had been his intention to give himself up after 'speaking with his friend.

OFFENSIVE WEAPON CHARGE On a charge of possessing an offensive weapon — a basebail bat — in a Twyford Street house on December 2, Maurice Bruce Rowlands .was remanded on bail to January 17. j No plea was entered by Rowlands, aged 23, unem- , ployed. It is alleged he had the bat in the house in circumstances which showed an intention to use it to commit an offence involving bodily injury or the threat or fear .of violence. 17 CHARGES A 17-year-old unemployed woman w’ho admitted and was convicted on 17 charges iof false pretence, involving : ‘sB96, was remanded to December 27 for a probation ! report and sentence. Donald Thomas McGillivray admitted the offences. Detective Sergeant Ros;well said a search of the 'defendant's address had revealed 26 cannabis plants in a bedroom, two more out'side and 525 cannabis seeds.
