U.S. tennis scholarship
PA Wellington Wellingtons top tennis player, Paul Smith, will leave New Zealand next month to take up a scholarship with the University of Wichita, in Kansas. Smith, aged 20, one of the country’s most promising young players, will leave for the United States on January 15 after competing in the first three tournaments of the New Zealand circuit. Smith will be accompanied by fellow Wellingtonian, Stephen Guy, who spent most of this year at the university. Smith’s move comes just 10 weeks after he returned from his second European tennis tour as part of the Junior Davis Cup squad sponsored by Spalding.
