Five Canterbury teams in N.Z. tennis finals
Canterbury will be widely represented at the national finals of the Skellerup junior tennis teams’ competition at North Shore next month. Five Canterbury sides qualified from zone eliminations last week-end, and one other team might yet join this group. The under 19 boys’ No. 2 team was unable to complete its assignment in Invercargill because of bad weather. But it is unbeaten so far, and it will Slay South Canterbury, which as one loss, next week-end. In Blenheim the Canterbury under 16 boys’ No. 2 team fought its way into the final by the narrowest of margins — one set. All the No. 1 teams had relatively easy wins in their zone eliminations. Results, with Canterbury names first, were:— Under 19 boys No. 1 team at Greymouth.— Beat Marlborough, 3-0: R. Mason beat C. Morris, 64), 6-7, 8-6; A. Chapman beat S. Folster, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4; Mason and Chapman beat T. Devine and Folster, 7-5, 6-0. Beat West Coast, 3-0: Mason beat K. Bebon, 6-1, 6-1; P. Beumelberg beat B. Hunter, 6-1, 6-1; Chapman and Beumelberg beat Hunter and M. Waghorn, 6-2, 6-0.
