Browning Shield tennis
Ellesmere beat North canterbury by 19 matches to 13 in a ! first round contest in the Brown- . ing Shield representative tennis ' series. Hugh Robinson was in good form for North Canterbury to win the mens top . singles match but Ellesmere ■ dominated jhe section to win six of the eight matches. North Canterbury had the better of the women’s singles and doubles but Ellesmere overwhelmed North Canterbury in the men’s doubles by 3-1 and in the mixed doubles by 6-2. Individual scores, with the North Canterbury names first, were:— Men Singles.—H. Robinson beat M. Beaumont, 9-6; S. Woods lost to S. Adair, 8-9; D. Archer lost to D. Murfitt, 0-9; G. McKenzie lost to G. Jackson, 5-9; K. Graham lost to G. Main, 3-9; R. Johnson beat T. Taiaroa, 9-7; G. Knowles lost to G. Hantz, 4-9; R. Fox lost to C. Munden, 7-9.
