Bread shops fail
Two Christchurch hot bread shops have gone into receivership. This comes after speculation last year by the big bakers in Christchurch that hot bread shops were a passing fad and would soon be out of business. However, other hot bread shops say their business is better than ever. The shops are the Sy-
denham hot bread shop and a Shirley branch, both run by Hot Bread Specialties, Ltd. The company’s receiver (Mr T. Lewis) said the shops had had a fall in trade. This was because of competition from other hot bread shops and because petrol prices and earless days had stopped customers going out of their way to buy hot bread.
However, Mr Lewis said the shops could still be a profitable enterprise. Both shops were for sale, together or as separate businesses. The shops would be kept open until they were sold, he said. “The debts of the shops are quite considerable. We are looking to sell them at a competitive price that will give the creditors a good return,” Mr Lewis said.
