Pilot killed in plane crash
PA» Masterton i» - " Al young man died in an air crash near Carterton at 8.40 a.m. yesterday. He was Russell Eric Tnunan, of Masterton, and formerly of Mount Albert, Auckland. His Fletcher aircraft was top-dressing the Carrington property of Mr Gilbert Evans when the plane turned for an approach run, appeared to stall, and crashed straight into the hillside from a low altitude on to a bordering farm. According to an onlooker, the plane caught fire on impact.
The police and the Fire Service were on hand within minutes and a light fire unit drove over the kilometre or so of hilly paddock from the metal road to the site of the crash. The wrecked plane was still smouldering and the unit put out the fire. The police were alerted through CB radio from a nearby farmhouse, via a helicopter which was at the aircraft loading strip close by-
