A contender for the New Zealand Olympic Games team, Michael Smith, of Christchurch, nears the finish of an interclub 200m butterfly event in the Queen Elizabeth II Park pool. He recorded an encouraging- 2min 13.8s, and is hoping for an even faster time in the inter-region carnival in Auckland on December 15 and 16. Smith needs to cut about four seconds off his best time to better the selection standard for the Moscow Olympics. He will also contest the 100m butterfly in the Auckland carnival.
