Johnny Land showed that he has made fine progress in preparation for making a fresh start at Invercargill on Tuesday when he was successful at the Addington trials yesterday.
Johnny Land was an im-j pressive all-the-way winner a week earlier, but yesterday: he missed the start slightly and settled well back in the field. He was handy enough on the home turn and finished boldly to wear down the pacemaker and win handily bv a length in 3min 28.5 s for
the 2600 m, the last 800 m in Imin Is, and the final 400 m \ jin 31.65. Johnny Land looksh ready to win at short notice, j Velebit, too, shaped like an:' early winner when he came;: on strongly to beat Lord Bri-|l gade and Ashley Lord forthird. Then came Augustus I ( Rex and Royal Lopez, which .
was not pushed after losing a handy position in the middle stages. j Royal Lopez is engaged at Waimate on Saturday and be j should make a bold bid in I the Rio L’on stakes. ‘ Be Sly did best in the main event, which drew only five starters. He recorded a leisurely 3min 34.3 s for the 2600 m. with the last 400 m in 29.45. Be Sly should not be hard to place in Canterbury during the holidays. Sharmbro, after breaking at the start, got up for second, ahead of Locarno, which 'did not come on as well as expected when pulled out near the 100 m. Locarno is .booked to travel north to contest the $lO,OOO Thames Cup on Saturday week. Ladyship Khan, after pacemaking, held fourth, clear of Bronze Queen, which broke badly at the start. Ginger Creek made all of
the pace and just lasted to beat her Golden Slipper Stakes rival, Two Score, by a nose in 2min 47s for the 2000 m, the last 800 m in Imin. 3.45. Two Score was most impressive, finishing on gamely after missing the start. He was placed at Addington last Saturday and looks a top chance at Waimate. No Regrets came on well for third only half a head away, ahead of Ima Star and Revelry. Braemar, Senator Lea Cyllarus, Royal College and Sea Rover shaped pleasingly in supporting events. Excalibur, which has been off the scene for some time, won the main event for trotters, beating Jerry’s Best and Winter Boy. Our One was a disappointing fourth in a break.
