Cam catchment flood study

Flooding problems in the Cam catchment should not be dealt with before a thorough economic appraisal of the scheme has been made. This was emphasised at a rivers' control and drainage committee meeting of the North Canterbury Catchment Board. The deputy chief engineer (Mr B. P. Dwyer) noted, in his report, problems of high flood levels in the Kaiapoi and the Cam rivers and associated drainage problems. A study of the Cam River and its tributaries had been undertaken to understand the extent of the problems, and the board had now provided

for a new works programme to begin in 1980 or 1981. “Expenditure is likely to be very high. The important thing to be considered is the matter of finance.” Mr Dwyer said. A recent meeting with the local authorities had agreed that there should be some sharing of contributions, but no specific proposals had been put forward. The chairman of the committee (Mr M. J, Dixon) said that the report was a proposal for financing. “The ball is in our court to investigate before seeing what is the next most obvious step to be taken," he said.
