Port Hills research fund

The North Canterbury Catchment Board has set up a Port Hills erosion-research fund. A meeting of the board’s soil-conservation committee has been told that the fund would be supported financially by the Paparua County Council and the Christchurch Drainage Board. A letter from the Heathcote County Council declined support. It said the work should be an integral part of the board’s responsibilities. Later in the meeting another letter from the Heathcote County Council was produced. It said the council was setting up a working party to evaluate land use in the Port Hills. Board members were invited to join the ; party but the committee declined to be represented. The chairman of the committee (Mr M. T. Grigg) said, “Unless the plan is regularised through districti scheme procedures, nothing is likely to happen.” He said I Catchment Board staff would 'freely give any information j that the Heathcote Council might require.
