PA Rotorua New Zealand workers could learn a lesson from! • the example set by Italian! ; tunnellers working on the iTongariro power development scheme, said the | Prime Minister (Mr Muldoon) at Turangi yesterday. I Mr Muldoon was in Tu-I | rangi to unveil a plaque ' commemorating the work done on the Moawhango; Tunnel by the Italian-based company, Codelfa Cogefar. “A characteristic of the Italian tunneller is that he does not sell his skills; cheaply,” said Mr Muldoon. “He demands good pay,' working conditions as safe! as the nature of the work; allows, free medical atten-| tion and housing, and other benefits. “On the other hand, he! does not expect anything for! nothing,” said Mr Muldoon. “He gives through his labour; as good as he gets.” Mr Muldoon said that by contrast. New Zealand | industrial bargaining featured too much of an “all take, ; no give” attitude. “We would greatly in-' crease our country’s productivity if unions coupled I their demands for wage in-; •creases with an undertaking 'to make an extra effort in, I return.” he said.
