Old mine shaft
Sir,—lf a reader has any knowledge concerning a mine drive worked in Butcher’s Gully, a tributary of Skippers Creek, could I request that they kindly contact the undersigned at 29 Mataora Road, Dunedin. Ore from the mine was crushed in an early design of stamp battery. The mine possibly dates to 1870. It may have worked the reef known as the Alma Lode. Although the work was probably for gold, tailings suggest
copper may also have been recovered.—Yours, etc., BRIAN JACKSON. December 1, 1979.
