Leggat hero of fine Canty win
[ Late sport
PA Wellington i A rollicking 68 in only 54 minutes by Richard Leggat, well supported by his captain. Vaughan Brown, brought Canterbury from behind to beat Auckland in the under-23 cricket tournament at Kllbirnie yesterday. Starting the day in trouble at 61 for three in reply to Auckland’s 251 for nine declared, Canterbury often had its back to the wall, including the last few minutes in a day of fluctuations, but valiantly went after the runs. Leggat was the hero, hitting eight sixes and three fours, and having a 100-run partnership with Brown in the 54 minutes. The pair earlier scored well when Canterbury reached 157 in, its first innings, 94 in arrears/ as Tom Hellaby took five for 29 and Martin Snedden two for 64.1 With Phillip Haydon clouting two sixes and five fours in his 60, Auckland appeared well placed at 79 for two when the declaration came, leaving the southerners 174 to win in an hour plus 20 overs. Though losing three wickets in one over when two runs short 1 of victory, Canterbury lasted well to take maximum points-. AUCKLAND First innings 251/9 decl. I Second innings P.
