Total elimination?
"The elimination of al! motorways” is the big change in the new scheme’s reading network, the City Plan says. Only the narrower St Al-; bans route, from Purchas Street north to the city boundary, and the Southern Motorway would be controlled by the Ministry of Works and Development. West of Madras Street, the Fendalton - -Avonside Motorway has been scrapped. But
the Avonside-Woodham Expressway is still required to the east. The Opawa Expressway will go ahead in place of the previously - planned motorway. Under the reviewed scheme, grade separation might be required someday along Brougham Street — at Colombo Street, Gasson Street, and Waltham Road.
