Rowberry appointed Chch player-coach
The Christchurch senior rubgy team will have a play-er-coach next winter, Jerry Rowberry having been appointed as the replacement coach for Russell Skerrett, who has gone overseas. Player-coaches are uncommon in Canterbury rugby — the last time Christchurch had one was Bob Duff more than 20 years ago—and few have enjoyed much success. However, Rowberry has impressive credentials. He has 10 years of senior rugby behind him, the last eight as Christchurch’s captain. These have been good years for Christchurch and Rowberry has been an outstanding captain. He is also highly regarded! as a coach, being a r- ,ruberj
of the Canterbury union’s coaching panel. High Schoo! Old Boys, which beat Christchurch in last season’s grand final, will again be coached by the partnership of Roily Manning and Paul Davies, while Marist
and Linwood, the other, two teams to be in the top four for the C.S.B. Trophy, will also have the same coaches. Murray Giera and Des Hansen have been retained by Marist and Peter Magarth will have another season with Linwood. Giera will be overseas for the first month of the season and Jake Burns, who was the forward coach before, Giera will probably fill in. Ceddie Smith will again have charge of New Brighton and John Creighton and Dave Jones will continue their association with Merivale-Pap-anui.
One leading club which has yet to appoint coaches for next year is University, which has both an A and a B team to consider.
