Avgas keeps rising

Aviation gasoline prices will continue to rise because oil companies have been forced to buy supplies on the spot market, according to the public affairs manager of the Mobil Oil Company (Mr T. R. Bayley). Mobil last week announced an increase of 15c a litre for its latest Avgas supplies, pushing the price up to 60c a litre. A shipment expected by Shell next month will probably be dearer, if it arrives, according to a Shell spokesman.

Mr Bayley said the oil companies had to buy Avgas wherever they could get it, and pay whatever price was demanded for it. This price would have to be passed on to the consumer. However, Mr Bayley said that although companies had probably lost money in importing Avgas it would be irresponsible for any company to stop buying supplies. “You cannot look at one period in isolation,” he said.
