Ship to end cruises
PA Auckland The Soviet cruise ship Fedor Shalyapin, which has been port-hopping in the South Pacific for the last five years, will be taken out of service on February 8. She uses too much oil. The 21,000-tonne former Cunarder Franconia is a turbine vessel and heavy on fuel. She is being withdrawn to Soviet waters, where refuelling will be less expensive, says the C.T.C. Lines’ managing director in New Zealand (Mr L. Goss). Her place will be taken by the 5000-tonne motor vessel Turkemenia, which uses two-thirds less fuel. The line is busy reallocating many hundreds of passengers to the Turkemenia’s cruise programme, which will start on February 8.
