Pope’s aspirations

Sir,—It is not my habit or intention to do violence to the truth and I must ask J. E Burt (December 1) not to condemn me thus, simply because my interpretation of Luke 19:27, does not coincide with his. What your correspondent’s Lord said to anyone, disciples or otherwise, is totally unknown as none of the New Testament can be read as an infallible tape-recording of any given event. The same parable in Matthew does not contain this passage and Verse 27 of Luke 19 can only be read as part of the parable itself by someone on the defensive because of what they consider to be an unpleasant reference. Some theologians have described this passage as a possible deliberate insert as it is out of context with the parable.—Yours, etc., ARTHUR MAY. December 1, 1979.
