Qantas 747 makes flight
NZPA Sydney A Qantas Boeing 747 aircraft left Sydney soon after 11 a.m. yesterday on a sightseeing flight to Antarctica. The flight left more than an hour and a half late. It is believed the delay was because of a problem in gaining Australian Department of Transport approval for a segment of the flight plan over Australia. The flight was organised by the Australian Boy Scout Association as a fund-raising venture and was fully booked.
Passengers and officials said they had no fears in spite of the Air New Zealand DCIO crash. Just before boarding the aircraft, officials of the Boy Scout Association said they had had three cancellations but these had been filled. The flight was expected to pass near the site of the DCIO crash on Mount Erebus. It arrived back at Sydney at 11.45 p.m. last night. Qantas has reviewed its Antarctic flight procedures at the request of the Flight Stewards’ Association but has said that the flights will continue.
