Among those on the flight is Mr Peter Mulgrew, whose experience of the Antarctic fitted him for the job of commentator for the trip. It is the fourth time he has acted in this capacity. He was the radio operator on the first overland journey with vehicles to the South Pole in 1956. Aged 52 he lives in Auckland, and until recently was group general manager for Alex Harvey Industries, Auckland. It was as a member of the New Zealand expedition to the Antarctic of 1957-58 that he joined Sir Edmund Hillary in his journey to the Pole. His adventurous spirit continued after he had taken part in the famous trans-Antarctic expedition. Tn 1960-61 he was a menu ber of the Himalayan scientific and mountaineering expedition; he was on the Himalayan schoolrooms expedition with Sir Edmund Hillary in 1964; and the Himalayan hospital expedition in 1966. He also climbed in the Swiss Alps
on an expedition to Cape Horn in 1973. Educated at the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, Mr Mulgrew joined the Navy and attended the Royal Naval College, Greenwich. He served for 11 years and for a time was chief radio electrician at the New Zealand radio sta* tion, Waiouru. He also served in H.M.S. Achilles until the cruiser left New Zealand to join the Indian Navy. Mr Mulgrew also served in the first New Zealand frigate to go to Korea during the Korean War. As a businessman, he was a director of A.H.I. Aluminium, L. J. Fisher and Company, Ltd, Fisher Windows, Ltd, and Rylock, Ltd. He was a member of the Himalayan Trust Board and the Spirit of Adventure Trust Board. He wrote several books, “No Place for Men,” “Gentlemen's Magellan,” about the Cape Horn ex* pedition, and “I Hold the Heights.”
