Judge’s elevation causes delay of murder trial
PA’ Palmerston North The appointment of Mr Justice Beattie as Governor-General-designate has meant the postponement of a murder trial in the Supreme Court at Palmerston North next week. A Justice Department spokesman said yesterday that an executive judge decision had ruled that Mr Jus- [ tice Beattie, because of his impending elevation, could not sit on the Bench. “We could not get a judge from Wellington, and others were fully committed in 'Auckland,” he said.
The spokesman said that the next Supreme Court session at Palmerston North was not until Februao’Set to go on trial was Louis James Dauncey, aged 21, a handyman, who faces a charge of the murder of a steelworker, Ivan Pahi Millan, aged 26, in a bar of the Majestic Hotel on July 20. An Auckland barrister, Mr K. Ryan, was recently engaged as Dauncey’s counsel for the trial.
