‘Bludger’ theory disputed
PA Wellington The Family Law Reform Association has written toi the National member of Parliament (Miss Marilyn War-i ing) taking issue with her reported assertion that the taxpayer was “picking up the tab” for men who de-i faulted on maintenance payments. While there might be al proportion of “bludgers" (reported at 140,000), there were far more recipient bludgers sheltering under domestic legislation and its interpretation by the courts, said the association's letter. It was not the nature of the average man to abrogate his responsibilities, particularly those of his children. However, too often he was driven to desperate measures after the treatment handed out by the courts. “Until sanity and equality are introduced in domestic legislation, particularly a finite and realistic term of alimony (the clean break),! there will be bludgers escap-| ing from bludgers,” said the association.
