Busy Community Centre
The Kaiapoi Community Centre will be a hive of activity tomorrow with scenes like this, as groups and individuals set up displays for a two-day art and craft festival.
Pictured below are two members of the Kaiapoi Spinning Group preparing for a previous exhibition. The group will be taking part again and is arranging almost continuous
spinning demonstrations. The festival developed from an idea of the Deputy Mayor and councillor, (Mr H. G. McAllister) who believed a special promotion would be
appropriate to mark the opening of the nearby Hansen shopping block. The result is a festival that promises to be the largest in the area for quite a number of years. An organising committee of Mrs H. Walton and Mr C. T. Williams, representing the North Canterbury Community Arts Council; Mrs A. Storer, Mr G. Dowdle and Mr McAllister, has arranged for the community centre to be used for crafts and the R.S.A. hail across the road, for floral and horticultural displays. The high school and district primary schools and women’s organisations have indicated support, and exhibitors may be coming from as far afield as Cheviot and Amuri. The official opening, at 2 p.m. tomorrow, will be undertaken by Mrs Moreen Eason, a member of the Southern Regional Arts Council and chairman of the Malvern Community Arts Council. The festival will remain open until 10 p.m., then on Friday from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. The North Canterbury arts council is sponsoring the event, from which any profits will be used for future activities and the borough council is supporting the venture with a $5O grant.
