Call for inquiry
NZPA-Reuter Rio de Janeiro i Iran’s Foreign Minister was quoted in Brazil yester-i day as saying the militants at the United States embassy in Teheran might refuse to release their hostages even if the Government agreed to a settlement with the United States. “It is possible that the Iranian Government would accept a compromise, but the students refuse it,” Abdolhassan Bani-Sadr said in an exclusive televised interview with TV Globo. Brazil’s biggest commercial television network. !
“In that case, the issue will be decided by Iranian public opinion.” Mr Bani-Sadr proposed that the American Government authorise an investigation into Iranian criminal charges against the former Shah. If the investigation found the former ruler guilty, Mr Bani-Sadr said, he should be returned to Iran. “If the U.S. accepts this principle, my Government, with the support of public opinion, will seek the immediate release of the hos:ages,” Mr Bani-Sadr said.
