Three die in P.N.G. fighting
NZPA Port Moresby Tribal fighting which sources say has already claimed three lives is contini uing in the Papua New (Guinean highlands. ! Latest reports say that 1200 villagers were involved in fighting yesterday and I that about 100 huts have been burned down. ! The fighting is taking I place in the Kup area in Kundiawa. The police said that up to 800 warriors have taken part |in this fighting over the last three days. They said the trouble began over allegations that men from the Goligup clan had abducted a young woman from the neighbour, ing Undee-Kombian clan. The police have been hindered in their attempts to stop the fighting by the mountainous terrain. The fighting broke out after a village court magistrate’s attempt to settle the matter peacefully, had failed. The Prime Minister (Mr Michael Somare) said in Parliament recently that he was worried about reports of renewed tribal fighting in the highlands. He noted in his speech yesterday that the period of emergency rule I throughout the highlands [had brought peace to the reIgion after a turbulent period ‘earlier this year.
