Drivers’ pay talks break down
PA Wellington ; Award talks for more than; 1 400 tanker drivers broke [down in Wellington yesterday. Stopwork meetings would be held throughout Zealand from tomorrow, said the Drivers’ Federation’s industrial officer (Mr R. Campbell) last evening. The drivers would consider a national strike and local! action. Although they were; classed as an essential industry they would ignore the provision for 14 days notice of industrial action. Negotiations were adjourned indefinitely with the federation claiming an 11.7 per cent wage increase and an award provision that no worker be made redundant; without union agreement. The oil companies have offered a 10.5 per cent increase.! Their advocate (Mr S. Marshall) said the employers had, also offered to increase the, drivers’ industry allowance. [
