Sultanas dumped on road

A parted brake hose caused Mr Russell Gray’s trailer unit to overturn and dump a load of sultanas on the Christchurch-Lyttelton tunnel approach road yesterday. Mr Guy escaped injury in the accident, his first in .15 years of truck-driving. He had been heading down the approach road towards Christchurch about 11 a.m. when the brake hose parted, locking the trailer wheels. Mr Guy manager to retain control of the tractor unit, but the widly swaying trailer overturned and struck a bank, spilling more than 10 tonnes of sultanas across the road. Traffic was reduced to one lane while the spilled cartons were loaded on to another truck.
