;PA n" 1 *”' Auckland i The 4 champion pacer, (Young iQuinn, is progressing (splendidXy in his preparation .for a .comeback to racing early ira the New Year. His fCambridge co-trainer, 'Garry Smith, reports that ‘Young. Quinn, having completed la course of swimming and jogging that began in mid-Seiptember, has been warming up in track work) this month, and it is a case of so fiar, so good. ( “Fvbj got him going a two-! I mile ’trip in around 4min! !45sec* with a final half ini 1 min ’sss and I would say! he’s ’about a month away from i going to trials,” said Smith l .. “He’d be flat to make the racing scene at Christmas, but a.ll going well he’ll go to a lojt of trials through January pud should be ready to race* at the Auckland Cup, meatitng in February.” ! Yjofung ’Quinn returned to: ’the Cambridge stables of
Charlie Hunter and Garry Smith as the season began in August, boasting winnings of $752,587 from his wonderful exploits in New Zealand, Australia and the United States. Recurring ligament trouble forced a decision by Hunter and the gelding’s owners to bring him home from America in the hope that he ! would stand up for another campaign. i Should he do so, his presence in the $lOO,OOO Auckland Cup at Alexandra Park ion February 9 would serve jas a great ’drawcard for the Auckland Trotting Club. Young Quinn won the event in 1974 and then the 1975 Inter-Dominion Championship Grand Final, at the same vanue, before showing Australians his true worth in the 1975 Miracle Mile in ■ Sydney. I He went to the United (States that year as a five-year-old, having won 37
races and $202,496, “down under.” Converted to American currency, this became $273,328. In an American career continually dogged by his ligament injury, Young Quinn, raced 63 times from 1975 until 1979 for a further 22 wins and $479,260. Now 10, Young Quinn’s career record reads 133 starts for 59 wins, 22 seconds, 14 thirds, nine fourths and seven remunerated fifths for his $752,587. ’ Should Young Quinn race! well at the Auckland Cup carnival and show no sign of his ligament trouble, it is possible he may have another tilt at the Interdominion, this time in Svdnev in March, as well as the Miracle Mile there in April. Hunter, currently campaigning a team in California, is due home on December 11. He will make the final decision on immediate plans for Young Quinn. 1
