Sapling, a big disappointment in the New Zealand Cup earlier this month, indicated he is in the right' order for the $20,000 Pan Am Mile at Addington on Satur-l day when he ran 2400 m | from post to post in 3min! 2.7 s at the Wyndham trials on Monday. The Young Charles entire! started from 50m in the open ! heat and, after sitting parked out from the 1800 m to the 1000 m, went to a clear lead. Sapling was joined by Fallimento early in the run home and the pair measured strides until Fallimento edged ahead near the line to win by a head. Neither was driven out. Fallimento, which began from 30m, was credited with the good time of 3min 6.4 c from a standing start and is close to winning form. The diminutive Honest Master! stallion did not receive runs'
to suit him during the Cup I meeting at Addington. Sapling was obviously not! himself on New Zealand Cup> day, but.pleased his connections on Monday and should add interest to what should be a rapid mile on Saturday. Sapling was timed to run his last mile in 2min 2.35, and his closing 800 m in 59.4 s on a perfect day with the track hard and fast. His regular driver, Henry Skinner, said later that Sapling felt “reasonably good” during the work-out. Watbro returned a satisfactory trial for the Pan Am Consolation Stakes when he won the open mobile mile heat in 2min 2.95. An upset winner of the Hannon Memorial at Oamaru; at Labour week-end, hei trailed the pacemaker, True! Surprise, until . inside the! finaL 20(Jm, when he started to lengthen stride. He headed i the pacemaker in the last 1 few metres to win going I away by half a length.
