Design awards for two Farr boats
An Auckland Company, Sea Nymph Boats, Ltd, has won . Designmark Awards for two of its yachts, the Farr 6000 and Farr 5000. The company comissioned the yacht designer Bruce Farr to design a model for volume production. After the success of the Farr 6000 it produced the Farr 5000, a smallerscale version capable of being towed by the average car. The director of the Industrial Design Council, (Mr Geoffrey Nees) said a “substnatial number” of the yacht was now being exported to Australia. The council’s field adviser (Mr Tony Manaton), who took part in sea trials of the Farr 6000, said in his report: “The Farr 6000 is a
high-performance 6.07 m centre-board yacht with 2.45 m beam and raisable ‘pop top’ hatch in the main cabin deck head. This combination provides for exciting class racing and comfortable cruising in coastal waters at low cost. “This boat is unsinkable in one piece, self-righting to New Zealand Trailer Yacht Association standard. and has a comprehensive user handbook. “It is suitable for novice cruising families who wish to convert from power to sail provided they take full advantage of the automatic membership-provi-sion of the class owners’ association, which is actively supported by the manufacturer and provides sail-training courses.
“The hull is capable of planing on a spinnaker run. The rig can be handled by a single competent yachtsman and is light enough for younger crew to tackle in moderate conditions. “Crew communication and movement in the boat is facilitated by sound ergonomic design. Claustrophobic and disorientation effects are minimised by the wide cabin and maximised cabin-to-cockpit visual communication. “The cabin provides allround vision, five berths, a toilet position screened by the galley bulkhead, a galley with water supply and overboard-draining sink, and room for five adults to it around the main cabin table.”
