Wage increases
Sir, — Reading your recent editorial on wage increases in New Zealand, I became quite confused with the various sources of statistics for this information. However, one thing is quite clear to me, and that is that at my company the average wage increase of our staff to date in the year 1979 has been 19.3 per cent solely because of award and wage order increases. Wordy arguments cannot reduce 19.3 per cent to a lower figure. Regrettably, none of our staff are better off with these increases and most are fully aware that the unions and the Government are not taking a responsible attitude towards inflation. It has been said that the country gets the government that it
deserves? Do we deserve this? — Yours, etc., G. W. HUNT, General manager, Moffat Appliances, Ltd. November 23, 1979.
