The effect of an explosion

In early 1976 an explosion at a chemical factory near the Italian town of Seveso deposited a fine layer of Dioxin dust over a large area of homes and farmland. The Dioxin had widespread effects on the area. The farmland around Seveso was left uninhabitable and the population of the town is still suffering from a disfiguring skin disease.

Pregnant women who happened to be in the area oh the day of the explosion faced an agonising decision on whether to terminate their pregnancies.

The “World In Action” documentary team looks at Dioxin and its long term effects on the lives of the people of Seveso. “Living Dangerously” screens on TVI late tonight.
