Jail for Tawa death

PA Wellington The death of a man at Tawa on July 17 has resutled’ in jail sentences for two men who appeared in the Supreme; Court at Wellington. John MacDonald Rei, aged 24, a sickness beneficiary, and Robert Gilbert John Lewis, aged 31, unemployed, had been charged with murdering Colin Roger Hancox. ’ In the course of the trial, (after hearing the evidence of ’a pathologist, Mr Justice (Ongley held that a verdict of ! murder was not open to the jury and the two accused ! pleaded guilty to manslaughter. His Honour sentenced Lew!is to four years jail and Rei; Ito three years. ! The two accused planned ’ (together to rob Mr Hancox of the sum of $2OOO they knew he would have in his ’ possession, thinking it would be required to complete an illicit drug deal, his Honour said. Whether the accused had the drugs, his Honour did not know and he said it did not matter, as their aim was to rob Mr Hancox. It did not mitigate the offence that Mr Hancox had been engaged in drug dealing. !
