Church “faces extinction'
PA Ashburton I The Presbyterian Church in New Zealand could cease to exist by the year 2000 if j nothing was done to arrest] trends in church statistics, ■ said rhe convener of the Church’s statistics com-: mittee (Mr O. McDowell) yesterday. The committee has studied church trends for the last seven years and its report reveals a steady drop in communicant members, in youth activities, and baptisms. The report says the events of the last three decades indicated a pattern that, if continued at the same rate, would be a disaster for the church". It notes a peak of activi-; ties during the 19605, then a gradual decline, “projecting tu zero or a negative church.” But the committee believes the statistics present a positive challenge to the church and emphasises the need to support its “beyond survival” programme.
