Sabotage of truck causes accident
A Christchurch driver did not know that his truck had been sabotaged until he used the brakes for the first .time yesterday, and found that they raised the deck hoist instead of stopping the vehicle. ; The Isaac Construction Company truck lost its load of shingle as it careered (across an intersection at Harewood before coming to a halt. The driver was shocked but unhurt, according to the police. Investigations into the. truck’s strange behaviour Showed that it had been tampered with at the weekend. and the brake and hydraulic hoist hoses swapped' over. The first the driver knew! of the sabotage was after he; had left Isaac’s yard in McArthurs Road, Harewood, 1 ■about 9.30 a.m. yesterday with a load of shingle. “It sounds funny, but it' was a stupid thing to do.; Anyone following the truck or crossing the intersection would have been wiped out,” I said Senior - Sergeant J. Coomber, of the Christ- ■ church police. A grader had to be called in to clear the dumped shingle from the road. Police inquiries into the ■ sabotage are continuing.
