Maori group to visit China
PA Auckland A team of 20 Maori performers yill visit China nexit month at the invitation of the Chinese Government. The team will leave Auckland on December 2 for a two-week tour. Leading the tour will be the Secretary of Maori Affiars (Mr K. P. Puketapu) and Archdeacon Kingi Ihaka, of Auckland. The group will perform in major cities such as Canton and Peking, and will also visit universities as part of the good-will tour. Most of the funding for the visit has come from the Crinese Government
and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. About $9OOO has also been given by Maori Trust monies. Use of Maori Trust money for a similar cultural mission to the United States earlier this year was criticised by the chairman of the Auckland District Maori Council (Dr Rangi Walker). He said the same principle applied to any money used for the Chinese visit. Mr Puketapu dismissed the objection as an “ideological difference." The Minister of Maori Affairs (Mr Couch) has also supported the use of Maori Trust funds for the visit.
