Chilled lamb gets good response
If local works can produce,! chilled lamb at the controlled; temperatures required to co- 1 incide with ship availability,l there is no reason the relatively :< new product could not be shipped; from Lyttelton to Britain, accord-i ing to t v 'e Christchurch manager] of Blueport A.C.T. (Mr P. A.|' Spratley). Until now only experimental! shipments have been made, after five vears of work by Borthwick and 'Sons (A’asia), Ltd, at its; Wairarapa laboratories. The product has been favourably commented on by British consumers who claim it tastes better and is of a higher quality i than traditional frozen export; ; lamb. The lamb has to be kept at a constant temperature from the time of slaughter until it reaches the retail outlet and can be shipoed only in containers with 1 precise temperature control. The New Zealand product man-a-er for lamb and mutton of 'Borthwick’s (Mr W. Geary) said! the shipments are a credit to Blnenort A.C.T. ‘•The carrying of the product bv Bluenort A.C.T. was a success from the start.” he said. “They are the only shipping compan' capable of carrying individually temperature controlled containers for us.” Blueport A.C.T. also helps de-j liver the product from the Til-] bury container terminal to London' shops. “With widespread consumer acceptance of chilled lamb, it is expected next year’s order will double.” Mr Geary said. The I success of the experiment could : open chilled lamb markets in lother overseas centres. ARRIVALS Coastal Trader (4 p.m.), 2500. Auckland (S.C.N.Z.)
