Women in fire brigades
Sir, — 1 have noticed comment and controversy on women becoming firemen in New Zealand. The comments by both union representatives and senior fire officers would be laughable, if they were not so serious. You may be interested to learn that in South Australia, we have women working side by side with men in the Country Fire Services. The Country Fire Services are directed by Mr Lloyd Johns, a New Zealander who, I am sure, would be the first to admit that attitude and aptitude are the only prerequisites for the job. The excuse “that women aren’t as strong as men” is not a legitimate argument when you consider that fire-fighting (both bush and house fires) is a team effort, and at no time a single-handed effort. Like any form of team-work it needs discipline — and even though we are volunteers and unpaid we are an effective, well-disciplined force. —Yours, etc., FIREMAN WENDY TODD. FIREMAN MARGARET ANNE KAT.
