Protest rally near home of Mr Begin

NZPA-Reuter Jerusalem Several thousand peace campaigners have blocked traffic near the Jerusalem home of the Israeli Prime Minister (Mr Menachem Begin) in protest against his Government's policy of encouraging Jewish settlement in occupied Arab lands. The demonstrators, supporters of the Peace Now movement, carried a coffin marked “Here lies the IsraelEgypt peace treaty.” and shouted slogans saying Jewish settlements in the West Bank endangered peace. Since Israel’s peace treaty with Egypt last year, the Begin Government has approved extensive Jewish settlement in areas of the occupied territories heavily populated by Arabs. There were isolated cases of stone-throwing and small demonstrations on the West Bank, protesting against detention and possible expulsion of Mr Bassam

Shaka, Mayor of Nablus. Mr Shaka has been given three days to appeal to a military review board against his proposed deportation for alleged remarks supporting a Palestinian ; guerrilla attack.
