Bolivian army units rebel
NZPA-Reuter La Paz Rebellious Bolivian Army units were entrenched yesterday in the main barracks in La Paz, rejecting the authority of the Defence Minister and military commanders. The leader of the revolt, the former army chief, General Luis Garcia Meza, emphasised that they were not rebelling against the civilian Government of the new President (Mr Lidia Gueiler) but against the military officials appointed by it. “Our movement is not directed against the constitutional government of President Lidia Gueiler. On the contrary, the action is eminently institutionalist,” he told a press conference. It was not immediately clear how much support General Garcia had, and how many units were backing the new army commander, General Rene Villaroel Rejas. sworn in only on Saturday by Mrs Gueiler. The rebels include several unit commanders, and military sources say some regiments in La Paz gave their support to the new commander. General Garcia had been appointed army commander by Colonel Albertc Natusch, who led a military coup on November 1, but he handed over power to Mrs Gueiler after 16 days ol solid civilian opposition. The rebels took control o' Miraflores Barracks in Lt Paz, headquarters of the armed forces joint command and restationed tanks inside and heavily-armed troop: outside to defend them selves.
