Swimming Canterbury likely to dominate age-group titles
Canterbury will have its usual heavy representation in the finals of the Speedo teleprinter age-group swimming titles at Queen Elizabeth II Park in two weeks. At the preliminaries on Saturday, Canterbury swimI mers fought keenly for places in the southern regional final which will also include swimmers from Otago, Eastern Districts (Mid and South Canterbury anl North Otago) and Southland. The standards were varied In some age groups the swimmers were within a couple of strokes of Canterbury records, but in othei groups they were up tc 20.0 s down on the records. To be fair, most of these times are exceptional and were set by exceptional agegroup swimmers. The finals are held at three venues simultaneously. The other two are Auckland and Palmerston North. All three are linked by teleprinter and a national win-
ner is found in each event. i Since the introduction of the carnival more than 1G years ago, Canterbury has jeen a dominant centre. And with several strong age groups this year it must be in contention to be the top centre and Wharenui, the top club. One feature of the preliminaries was the dominance of the Wharenui Club. In virtually every event its swimmers filled most of the lanes and the top places. As usual one swimmer lominated most age-groups :md all should be to the fore n the national results in wo weeks. Alex Bould (Wharenui) had the best time in three oi the five under-14 events, but times in this agogroup were generally well down on last year; Bould, Glen Mclntosh (Wharenui) and Maui Stuart (New Brighton), the other two winners in the under-14 age-group, will be hardpressed to force themselves into national placings.
Lisa Binning (Wharenui), a younger sister of the New Zealand representative, Rick.e, failed by one to scoop the pool in the under-14 girls group. She managed only third in the 100 m butterfly. But the first two girls in this event produced two of the outstanding times of the evening. Susan Willis (Wharenui) won the race in Imin 11.4 s and just 0.2 s behind was Nicola Chambers (Wharenui). Both times were faster than the winning time in last year’s final and the meeting record of Imin 10.3 s could be in jeopardy in two weeks. In freestyle, backstroke and breaststroke, Miss Binning had to fight hard to hold first place and will need to be in top form to maintain her dominance in two weeks. The boy’s under-12 events were shared. Nicolas Elsmore (Wharenui) looked an accomplished competitor, winning the medley. Kirsten Mclntosh (Wha-
renui) won three of the Indi-', v'idual events in the under--12 girls’ group but finished well back in the medley, her weak event being breaststroke. As a result, Deborah: Small (Wharenui) won the medley event and Michelle Winter (New Brighton) the breaststroke. Another Binning, Kiri, also a member of the Wharenui Club, is making her presence felt as a competitor in the under-10 group. She won three of four events by wide margins but was prevented from taking a clean sweep by Julie Beaumont (New Brighton) in the breaststroke. Miss Beaumont’s time was only 4.0 s off the Canterbury record. Michael Bouweester (Wharenui) enjoyed a similar dominance in the boys’ under-10 group. He had to be satisfied with second
place in the 100 m breaststroke behind his club-mate, Shane Ellison. In the 100 m backstroke, Bouweester was only I.Bs off the Canterbury record. An indication of the improvement this swimmer has made in a year is shown in his time for the same event in last year’s preliminaries. It was Imin 47.05, compared with Imin 35.9 s on Saturday. The top three swimmers in each event are shown in the results. Abbreviations used are: New Brighton (N. 8. North Beach (Nth B.).
