Public meeting on bill in Chch
A public meeting to discuss the implications of the National Development Bill will be held in the Limes Room of the Christchurch Town Hall on December 5. The meeting has been organised by the Canterbury Council for Civil Liberties. It will be chaired by Mr C. B. Atkinson, of the Canterbury District Law Society. Speakers at the meeting will include the member of Parliament for Christchurch Central (Mr G. W. R. Palmer), the president of the Canterbury Trades Council (Mr W. R. Cameron), a member of the Waimairi County Council
(Mr P. Bonisch), and the chairman of the Council for Civil Liberties (Dr K. P. Clements). Dr Clements said that the National Development Bill had provoked considerable opposition from traditional supporters of the Government, as well as its opponents, and he believed that the meeting would indicate the extent of opposition to the bill in Christchurch. “Citizens of Christchurch can express their public concern about this bill, and make the Government realise that it is accountable to the public in the first and final instance,” Dr Clements said.
