Scheme to counter river vandalism
’ Waimairi and Heathcote counties will be asked to join the Christchurch Drainage Board and Christchurch City Council in a scheme de-; signed to catch people who throw things into the city’s! streams. Rewards would be offered, for reports of vandalism. Property owners whose land borders the streams should also be asked to be more careful about allowing pollutants to enter the water, said the Drainage, Board’s construction and 1 treatment works committee. Local bodies would be approached about appointing
honorary wardens to help inspectors keep an eye on the streams. The board has! no statutory authority to ap-I point wardens. Mr J. F. Davidson said there would still be the problem of having wardens with no real power. Similar problems were faced by Lyttelton Harbour Board wardens. “Unless they have some authority, they can be told to go to hell, which they invariably are,” he said. Board members said there should be a common scheme throughout the metropolitan area.
