Pakeha women made Maori wardens
PA Whangarei New Zealand's first pakeha Maori wardens have been appointed at Whangarei. Mrs Joan Rosetta and Mrs Betty Bartlett have received their warrants and badges and. according to the deputy director of the Department of Maori Affairs (Mr B. Robinson), appear to be the first Europeans to become wardens. They were put forward for appointment by the Whangarei Maori Committee. The suggestion received the blessing of the Tai Tokerau District Maori Council and the department’s office at Whangarei before being approved hy the Minister (Mr Couch). The department’s dis-
trict officer at Whangarei (Mr T. Parore), said the two women had associated with the Maori community over a long period and he was in no doubt that thev would be ‘'able to relate’’ to Maoris. Although the old Maori Welfare Act clearly stipulated that Mauri wardens were to be of Maori descent. the later Maori Services Act, 1975. stipulates only that wardens be nominated by the local district council and live in the area for which thev are appointed. The secretary of the Whangarei branch of the Wardens’ Association (Mrs M. Millar) said. "We have all got to live together and we- thought it was time we started working together.”
