Late sport England recovers

NZPA Adelaide England’s left arm spinner | Derek Underwood, took eight for 41 at Adelaide yesterday : to restore the touring side’s pride on the second day of their four-day match against Combined Universities. At the close of play England was 40 for one in its sec-! ond innings after Underwood’s effort helped to dismiss the University team for 168 in reply to England’s first innings total of 179. ; During a day of incidents, ;the England opening batsman, Geoff Boycott was felled by a bumper and forced to retire hurt in the second over [of its second innings. I The University team resumed yesterday morning at

four for none and after losing a quick wicket looked to be on the way to further embarrassing the England team until Underwood was brought into the attack. Underwood took three wickets in seven balls shortly before lunch and the young University side never really recovered from the blow. Their batsmen had no answer to Underwood’s unerring accuracy and his 23.5 overs cost only 41 runs as well as claiming him eight wickets. The only fight from the university team was put up by Chris Beatty who scored 53 before he was caught and bowled by Underwood with the first ball after tea.
