Bridge at Twizel to be removed
Wellington reporter The Bailey Bridge at Twizel will be removed and the road will be reduced to using the original one-way bridge as Twizel township closes and traffic is reduced. Members of the National Roads Board were concerned that putting all traffic back on the single one-lane bridge would pose a hazard to motorists not aware of the change, particularly as excessive speed was likely there. The removal of the Bailey Bridge, which badly needs repair and strengthening, has been deferred for a year to allow traffic counts to fall and to permit discussion with the local District Roads Council. The Bailey Bridge will be inspected and a weight limit may be imposed as well as the speed restriction.
