Income tax
Sir, — With regard to your editorial “Fine tuning a tax return” (November 22), the idea of manipulation to avoid income tax would not be so popular if the tax scales treated middle-income earners more reasonably. Of course most do not attempt to manipulate their income but many leave for Australia
where as well as incomes being higher for those who are prepared to work, taxes are lower. I suspect that this is why we are losing so many people, especially the young and skilled we can ill afford to lose. Their departure also means that there are fewer earners to meet the burden of tax. — Yours, etc.,
J. MARSHALL. November 22, 1979.
