M.P.’s strip-search allegation denied

PA Wellington An allegation that male police officers had stripsearched women was denied yesterday by the Deputy Commissioner of Police (Mr K. O. Thompson). The allegation was made by Miss Marilyn Waring, the National member for Waipa, during a sitting on Tuesday of the Parliamentary Statutes Revision Committee,

which was hearing submissions from the Council for Civil Liberties on the Police Amendment Bill and the Crimes Amendment (No. 2) Bill.

After a council spokesman had said that a strip search of a woman by a male police officer would cause such an outcry that immediate corrective measures would be applied, Miss Waring said: “It’s happening all the time.”

Miss Waring then said that no woman would suffer the indignity of making a complaint and getting herself victimised by "taking on” a policeman.

Mr Thompson said that he did not know of any such search, which would be against police policy of persons being searched by officers of the same sex.
