N.Z. piper beats Scots
NZPA London A New Zealander. Murray Henderson, has won the unofficial world bagpipe championship in Scotland. Mr Henderson, aged 27, was placed second in each of the two classes of the Grants Scotch whisky championship, to give him over-all first place at the competition at Blair Castle, Perthshire.
He beat 11 other top pipers, including another New Zeaiander, Donald Bain, to win the prized Balvenie Trophy, a silverchased drinking horn. The championship is restricted to the winners of important bagpipe competitions during the year. All entries are by invitation only and, in the absence of a formal world cham-
pionship, the Grants competition is regarded as the world title. Originally from a farm near Timaru, Mr Henderson now lives at Glamis (Tayside) where he makes bagpipe reeds. This year’s championship was the fifth time he had competed at Blair Atholl, coming second last year but being unplaced on the other occasions.
